Things Really Freshens Me Up

Its the mix of words and music that enthralls me. Movies though I am open enough yet too much of dreams doesn't fits into my kitty. An intriguing story line with good editing goes well with me. Though of late I have ventured into the arena of parallel cinema, I have to cover some distance before I consume them yet maintain my throughput.

I had an initial training in classical signing but later discontinued it. I cannot remember the last time I sat with my harmonium, yet I still feel the urge to do it soon. How soon is a million dollar question. For me Nagrulgiti has more variation then Rabindra Sangeet. Yet I love these two. Whats more appleaning is the usage of words. For Krishnakali sung by Suchitra Mira does wonders to my ears. Similarly form the present generation its Sumanda as I call him stands out. The feeling he imparts is enormous and astonishing. Among the female voices apart from Begum Aktar, Suchitra Sen I feel Lopamudra seems wonderful. Apart from these I am quite attached to Gibanmukhi songs initiated by Sumonda, Nachikta, Anjan Dutta. Though Sumanda might initiate an argument about calling it Gibanmukhi may be that he doesn't want to fall into categories. That Pagla dasu by Suman da is great. Among the more recent band music I frankly confess I hate them as they seems to be copycats with less originality. But still Rupam Islam stands out with his Ekla Ghar, Bycicle Chor etc.. As far as lopamudra is concerned I appreciate are own style. Rest Swagatalakshmi, Arati and our evergreen melody queen Sandhya can be heard any time. Well for oldies Shyamal Mitra, Hemanta, Manabendra are too good.

Cinema

Well I am just hooked to Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen who epitomizes love, passion and commitment at any given situation. May be that i am going too far but this is what that hooks me to Bengali cinema. As far as the new movies say after 1980's are concerned I did liked some but then balant copying of Hindi flicks really gets on to my nerves. What disturbs me a lot is that their half-hearted approach towards copying. Posenjit looked good in Amar Sangeet and now the only hero after Uttam Kumar seems to have reinvented himself with Choker bali, Khela. Aparna Sen's 36 Chouringee Lane is really good. And the very Bengali Star-lats like Satyajit Ray, Ritwick Ghatak, Budha Dev are really wonderful to watch after all what bengal thought I India though later. Things have changed but the sliverlinning is still their with Aparna Sen and other trying out something different.

Well Kishore does wonders to one ears. He is fascinating as well as scintillating. Md Rafi though had a wonderful voice but some how I felt it otherwise. What I liked about Kishore Kumar is that his voice suited Rajesh Khanna the first superstar of Hindi cinema so well that you could hardly differentiate as to who is lip singing and who is singing. Hemanta and Manna de too sounds good. Well now we have whole new bunch of composer and singer coming up but that everlasting effect is still missing. Himesh did captured one imagination for a brief stint but then hey where he is now the nasal singing sensation. Kumar Sanu, Abhijit and Udit Narayan did their part but now they are fading. But Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher are the one to look forward to. As far as Gazal is concerned Mehndi Hussain, Pankaj Udash and Jagit Sing is the one I like.

Cinema

Basically all represents too much exaggeration of reality. Yet some are good. I am big fan of Rajesh Khann for his movies not only had the legendary voice of Kishore Kumar but also the story line were good. Though Bachhan stands tall yet I have never liked him. Among the old ones Balraj Sahani, Guru Dutt were fabulous. Now its Aamir Khan, Sharukh Khan, Rithik Roshan and to some extent John are doing good works. The first movie that I saw in the movie theater was Jo Jita Woh Sikandar. I saw it in Manoj takiz. It was the very first time and that too bunking tuitions which i still hate. Funnily i brought two different tickets i mean for different categories to watch the same cinema. Old memories are difficult to forget isn't it.

English

Well I stated with Phill Colins and then moved on to Pink Floyd, John Denver, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendricks, Eagles, U2 [Bono], Kenny-G, Cliff Richards, Beetles, Madonna [material girl the best], Azelle, Jenifra Lopez, Ronana Keating and Scorpions.

Incidently its the cost and the time associated with watching movie in theater that got me hooked to English and for that matter foreign language cinema. I stared late during my post graduation and now I do possess a moderate collection of what i feel good foreign language movies. During my masters watching movies in New Empire was the cheapest option as it showed mainly foreign flicks that were not lengthy at the same time costs were somewhere between rs.5 to Rs.7, obviously for that you need to seat on top of the balcony. One needed to climb 5 floors, tickets of which were called kachar ticket. Here is a list of movie which i do have in my personal collection and would love to watch them again:
